PTW | Trauma Institute Showcases Research on Grief and Trauma at International Events
Dr Kamila Midor, a member of SFU’s Trauma Institute, recently gained recognition through her involvement in two international events advancing the understanding of grief and trauma.
From 22–25 May 2025, Dr Kamila Midor, participated in the prestigious Association for Psychological Science (APS) Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. This major international gathering attracted leading researchers from top US universities such as Harvard, Stanford, and Yale. The event focused on cutting-edge developments in psychology, including the role of AI in emotional support and innovative therapy approaches like psychedelics. Dr Midor presented both a talk and a poster entitled “‘If You Fight It, It Only Gets Worse.’ Bereaved Americans and Poles Discussing What Helps Them in Their Grieving Process.” Based on a qualitative study, her work explored cultural similarities and differences in grieving, sparking meaningful discussions among attendees. During her visit, she also explored the Smithsonian museums, enriching her experience with reflections on history and trauma.
Back in Poland, on 3 June 2025, Dr Midor led a thought-provoking event at the main public library in her hometown of Żywiec. The meeting centred on the Polish translation of Our Polyvagal World: How Safety and Trauma Change Us by Stephen and Seth Porges, translated by Dr Midor herself. The lecture covered trauma definitions, PTSD, Polyvagal Theory, and trauma treatment, followed by a lively Q&A session. The discussion highlighted the importance of addressing trauma openly, even in challenging contexts.
These events demonstrate SFU Trauma Institute’s commitment to advancing research and fostering dialogue on trauma across cultures.
